Kubota M4-071 Problems: Engine Troubleshooting
Engine starts hard or will not start
The fuel filter plugging is a common cause of engine difficulty starting or not starting at all. To address this issue, one should change the filter element and bleed the fuel lines to remove any air trapped inside. Additionally, in some cases faulty fuel injection nozzles or an malfunctioning fuel injection pump can be responsible for issues related to engine start up. In such instances it is necessary to replace the nozzles and repair or replace the injection pump accordingly.
Engine stops suddenly during operation
Fuel injection pump timing was found to be incorrect, and should be adjusted according to manufacturer specifications. Additionally, the fuel filter was noted as being plugged; the filter element needed replacement. Lastly, the engine temperature was not at an optimal level; warming up the engine would normalize it.
Engine starts but then stops
The engine may start but then quickly stop due to a clogged fuel filter. In this case, the filter needs to be cleaned or replaced in order to restore proper functionality. If the filter replacement does not resolve the problem, it is likely that there is damage to the fuel injection pump which requires either repair or replacement. Additionally, a dirty air filter could be causing problems and it should be checked and either cleaned or replaced if necessary.
Engine overheats
Radiator core clogs or radiator cap leaks are common issues. Cleaning the radiator and replacing the cap can help resolve these problems. Additionally, if engine coolant is insufficient, adding coolant and checking the components of the cooling system may be necessary. Lastly, a loose or defective fan belt should be changed as needed; additionally, filling up an insufficient crankcase with engine oil can help ensure optimal performance.
Engine power is reduced
The injections nozzles in the fuel system may become clogged or burnt, requiring a check and potential replacement. Additionally, the fuel lines and hoses can be subject to clogging, necessitating cleaning of these components. If an air filter is dirty, it should be serviced. Furthermore, if a cylinder head gasket becomes worn then this should be replaced as required.
Engine knocks or noises
Engine knocks or noises can be caused by various issues, including an engine that is not fully warmed up and insufficient oil levels. Additionally, improper fuel injection timing and worn or broken pistons can also lead to these sounds. To remedy the issue, the temperature of the engine should be normalized by warming it up appropriately, oil level checked and topped off as needed, fuel injection timing set as recommended, and defective or misaligned connecting rods addressed with either alignment or replacement.
Engine stops when idling
When the engine stalls when idling, it is likely due to a wrong adjustment of low idle speed. To remedy this issue, testing and adjusting must be done as soon as possible. Additionally, if the valve clearance is not correct, an adjustment procedure will be needed. Lastly, if the fuel injection pump is damaged, either replacing or rebuilding it may be necessary for proper functioning of the engine.
Oil pressure is low
Oil pressure can be impacted by a variety of factors, including low oil level. To fix this issue, the crankcase should be filled to the proper oil level. In the event that it is not due to low oil levels, then it may indicate that either the oil pump is worn or damaged and needs replacing or that the oil filter is clogging and needs replacing or serviced.
Kubota M4-071 Problems: Transmission Troubleshooting
Transmission noise
Transmission noise is a common issue in many vehicles and can be caused by a variety of factors. Worn or damaged gears, incorrect backlash, worn or damaged gear shift forks, stuck or worn out shaft splines, low transmission oil level and defective bearings are all possible causes of transmission noise. To remedy this situation the correct steps need to be taken such as replacing gears or adjusting backlash correctly, changing shift forks, replacing the shaft and filling the transmission housing to proper oil level. In addition if bearings are cracked or worn then replacement is required along with changing the contaminated oil.
Difficulty shifting gears
When a vehicle is having difficulty shifting gears, it could be due to the stuck or worn gear shift linkage. To resolve this issue, the linkage should be lubricated or replaced. In some cases, the problem may be caused by a worn or unadjusted clutch which needs to be adjusted or replaced. Additionally, worn out or damaged gear shift forks should also be checked and changed if necessary. Finally, all parts of the gearshift mechanism must also be inspected for wear and tear and any that are found should then be replaced as soon as possible.
Lack of transmission oil pressure
Low oil pressure in the transmission can be caused by a number of factors, including low oil level, dirty transmission fluid filter element (if equipped), and defective relief valve. To fix this issue, it is recommended to check and refill the transmission oil if necessary, service or replace the transmission fluid filter as needed, and change out any defective relief valves.
Transmission oil leaks
Transmission oil leaks can be caused by damaged seals or gaskets. In order to fix this issue, the worn seal or gasket should be replaced. Another cause of transmission oil leaks is too much oil in the transmission, which requires draining of the excess oil from it.
Kubota M4-071 Problems: Hydraulic System Troubleshooting
Hydraulic system overheats
An overheating hydraulic system may be caused by several factors. These include the wrong type of hydraulic fluid, dirty or contaminated oil, air in the system, and a defective main relief valve. To prevent further damage to the system it is important that the proper type of hydraulic fluid be used and any existing oil replaced with clean oil free of contaminants. Additionally, all air must be bled from the system and if there is a defective main relief valve it should be replaced immediately.
Low hydraulic oil pressure
Low hydraulic oil pressure can be caused by a variety of issues. Insufficient hydraulic fluid will require more to be added to the system, while a clogged filter element may need to be cleaned or replaced. Leaks in the hydraulic piping must be identified and repaired. The hydraulic control valve could have been improperly adjusted and needs to be corrected accordingly. If the problem is found with the pump, it may need to be exchanged or serviced. Lastly, if failure has occurred within the cylinder this would require replacing or repairing it as well.
Hitch won’t raise or raises slowly
Hitch won’t raise or raises slowly due to a defective hydraulic pump, a malfunctioning main relief valve, and a faulty hydraulic spool valve block. To fix these issues, it may be necessary to replace or repair the hydraulic oil pump, relief valve, and/or hydraulic cylinder. Additionally, insufficient fluid levels should be addressed by adding more fluid as needed while clogged filter elements require cleaning or replacement. If excessive loading is present then reduction of the load is recommended.
Hitch won’t drop or drops slowly
When experiencing a hitch that won’t drop or drops slowly, the most likely cause is hydraulic cylinder failure. To remedy this issue, it is necessary to either install a new hydraulic cylinder or repair the existing one. Additionally, an incorrect adjusted hydraulic control valve can be causing the problem and must be adjusted correctly for proper functioning. If none of these are the issue, then perhaps the hitch cross shaft might be worn and needs replaced or just needs to have its adjustment checked.
3-point hitch jerks when lower or lift
The 3-point hitch may jerk when attempting to lower or lift due to various issues, such as dirty hydraulic oil that needs to be changed. If the hydraulic pump is not working, it must be replaced or repaired. Additionally, air in the hydraulic lines can cause jerking and should be bled out. Finally, a defective hydraulic control valve block will need to be repaired or replaced and any malfunctioning of the hydraulic cylinder requires repair or replacement.

Steering wheel has too much free-play
The steering wheel on a vehicle may have too much free-play due to the wear of the steering column coupling or shaft. To remedy this, a defective part must be changed. If the steering pump is not working, it needs to either be repaired or replaced. Additionally, worn or loose steering linkage joints must also be repaired or changed if necessary. Finally, if there is damage or wear to the power steering control valve then it should be replaced or repaired as needed in order to properly address any excessive free-play in the vehicle’s steering wheel.
Steering is difficult
When steering becomes difficult, it is important to investigate the cause. Potential causes include air in the steering system which can be bled off, clogged or malfunctioning filters or valves that require maintenance and/or replacement as well as low fluid levels that need to be addressed. Uneven tire wear and incorrect toe-in should also be checked for. Lastly, a leaking steering cylinder may require changing of a damaged piston rod or worn seal sleeves.
Tractor pulls to right or left
When it comes to tractor pulls to the right or left, there are many potential causes that need to be considered. This could include a malfunctioning power steering control valve, damaged steering cylinder, improper toe-in, loose or worn steering linkage components and defective or improperly adjusted front wheel bearings. In addition, uneven wear on front tyres can also be a factor and should be replaced if necessary. As such, inspecting these parts and making repairs or replacements as required is essential in order to ensure proper tractor operation.

Battery will not charge
The battery not charging can be attributed to multiple causes. Electrical cable connections may be loose or corroded, and require service or tightening of the connections. Additionally, electrical terminal connectors may be defective and need to be changed accordingly. A worn battery also might contribute to this problem, requiring a replacement. Lastly, a loose or defective belt could cause the problem and require adjustment of tensioning of the belt, or changing it altogether.
Starter turning slow
When a starter is turning slowly, it can be due to low battery power. To rectify this issue, the battery must be recharged. If the battery will not hold a charge, it may need to be serviced or replaced. Additionally, if there is corrosion on the terminals or disconnected wires, they should also be checked and serviced or changed.
Starter motor is not working
Starter motor issues can be caused by a variety of malfunctions, such as low battery power or faulty wiring. If the battery is low, it should be recharged or replaced. Additionally, if the battery wiring is disconnected or improperly connected, an inspection and proper connection must be made. In cases where the starter motor fails to start the engine, replacement or repair may be required.
I have personally experienced some of the problems mentioned in this article while using my Kubota M4-071. The engine start up issue was a particular nuisance for me. After changing the fuel filter and bleeding the fuel lines, the problem was resolved. I think it’s important to note that besides specific problems mentioned in this article, it’s also important to regularly service and maintain the Kubota M4-071 according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
